Meet Sarah.

We first met Sarah on Mother’s Day after she was nominated by a friend for our Mother’s Day free draw. What started as a simple way to celebrate an incredible mum introduced us to Sarah, her daughters Indiana and Darcie, and the remarkable journey they’ve faced together as a family.

Just one day after Indiana was born, Sarah’s world changed forever when she was diagnosed with bilateral cataracts, nystagmus and esotropia. She was registered sight impaired as a tiny baby, and before her first birthday she had already undergone multiple eye surgeries due to repeated regrowth.

At just 18 months old, after her vision still hadn’t developed as doctors had hoped, further testing revealed Indiana also had microphthalmia and microcorneas—abnormal eye structures that severely limit her vision. It was then Sarah heard the words no parent is ever prepared for: your baby is blind.

Today, Indiana wears contact lenses full time to give her a small amount of functional vision. Despite countless hospital appointments, surgeries and uncertainty, she continues to face every challenge with incredible strength, courage and a smile.

Through it all, Sarah has never left her side. Alongside working as a dedicated teaching assistant, she’s been there for every appointment, every surgery and every milestone. Determined to turn their experience into something positive, she also created Indiana’s Instagram page, @lifewithcataracts, where she openly shares their journey, spreads awareness of childhood blindness and offers hope and support to other families facing similar challenges. Her strength, resilience and determination to help others, even while navigating her own family’s challenges, is nothing short of inspiring.

Now Sarah is taking on her biggest challenge yet—running the Great North Run blindfolded to raise vital funds and awareness for childhood blindness, giving others just a small glimpse into the challenges Indiana faces every single day. She has been absolutely smashing her training, showing the same resilience, determination and commitment that she’s demonstrated throughout Indiana’s journey. Every mile she runs is for a cause that is deeply personal to her, and she’s determined to make every step count.

She won’t be doing it alone either. Fin and Mitch are also stepping up by taking on Tough Mudder to stand alongside Sarah, Indiana and their family.
