Herbert Suerth, Jr. was a member of the renowned “Easy Company” of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, a unit operating under the command of Colonel Robert F. Sink, affectionately known as “Five-Oh-Sink.”

Suerth’s combat experience was primarily during the intense Battle of the Bulge. He narrowly missed qualifying for Operation Market-Garden, falling one jump short, which meant his active engagement was limited to the front lines of the Ardennes offensive.

Around Thanksgiving, Suerth was deployed to France, joining his division at Camp Mourmelon near Reims.

The unit was in a period of recuperation, licking its wounds after the arduous fighting in Holland. Historically, replacements were often met with skepticism by battle-hardened veterans who had endured significant loss and hardship together since early 1942. These veterans were reluctant to integrate new personnel into their tightly-knit group. However, Suerth recalled a different experience, stating, “I don’t remember any of that negative stuff at all. I think I was smart enough to keep a low profile.”

Upon reporting to his platoon leader, Lieutenant Ed Shames, Suerth introduced himself with his full name, including “Junior.” This led Shames to immediately tag him with the nickname “Junior,” which persisted throughout Suerth’s tenure with Easy Company and in subsequent reunions. Edward David Shames, the last surviving officer of “Easy Company,” passed away peacefully at home on March 12, 2021, at the age of 99.
